July 2023

The July Quarterly Business Monitor looked back at trading performance within the tourism and hospitality sector in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire during April - June 2023.

Some of the key findings are noted below:

  • Visitor numbers from the local area, elsewhere in Scotland and the rest of the UK were predominantly about the same as normal. Looking to international visitors, 40% of respondents indicated that they were seeing more overseas visitors than normal.
  • The main highlights reported included strong demand, several business seeing the return of international visitors and the positive impact the good weather had on many of the respondents' trading performance.
  • Barriers noted were increasing business costs and recruitment challenges.
  • Looking ahead, the majority of respondents indicated that enquiries and bookings for the next 3+ months are about the same as normal. However, a significant percentage said they were seeing fewer enquiries and bookings than normal, a reflection perhaps on the ongoing impact of the cost of living together with a shortened booking window.
