Dark skies 2 workshop 2160 x 800 px 2

Help your visitors discover our dark skies with a beginners guide to Astro-tourism

Following on from VisitAberdeenshire’s Dark Skies Workshop in August, we are delighted to welcome Richard Darn, Dark Skies UK, back to the North-east for this practical and hands on workshop.

Astro-tourism is a growing market, and Aberdeenshire is said to have some of the darkest skies in the UK (and in Western Europe), making it an ideal destination for stargazing enthusiasts.

By attending this beginners workshop, you will learn about the planets, stars, Northern lights and meteors, including top tips on how to identify the constellations. You will then be able to share this information with your visitors, helping to maximise the opportunity presented by our dark skies. Richard will help to build confidence in using different apps and demonstrate how you can help your visitors spot the objects in the dark skies.

Weather permitting, there may also be the opportunity to go outside to try it out for yourself.

The session will be informative and fun and will cover:

  1. Simple information on planets, stars, northern lights and meteors
  2. Tips on identifying the brighter stars and constellations
  3. Pointers to using the binoculars and targeting suitable objects in the night sky
  4. Using apps to build confidence
  5. A hit list of things people can find for themselves
  6. Tips on what works well when doing a sky tour for visitors
  7. Using your smartphone to capture Northern lights and the Milky way
