Celebrating the impact of Welcome to Aberdeenshire volunteers during national volunteers’ week

As part of National Volunteers’ Week, VisitAberdeenshire is recognising the ongoing contribution of the Welcome to Aberdeenshire volunteer team.

National Volunteers' Week, 1 - 7 June 2026

As part of National Volunteers’ Week (1 to 7 June 2026), VisitAberdeenshire is recognising the ongoing contribution of the Welcome to Aberdeenshire volunteer team and the role they play in supporting the region’s visitor economy.

Volunteers are a key part of the welcome experience at Aberdeen South Harbour, providing a friendly and knowledgeable first point of contact for cruise passengers arriving in the region. Their role extends beyond wayfinding, helping visitors make the most of their time in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire by sharing information on the wide range of attractions, experiences and services available across the area.

Growing contribution to the visitor economy

The impact of the programme has continued to grow year on year, reflecting both increased cruise activity and the strength of the volunteer network supporting it.

Over the past three seasons, volunteers have contributed: 1,876 volunteering hours and greeted 82 cruise calls.

These figures demonstrate significant growth in both participation and delivery, with volunteers playing an important role in enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Supporting positive visitor experiences

While the data highlights scale, the true impact of the programme is reflected in the experiences created on the ground.

Volunteers provide practical information and local knowledge to visitors, helping them navigate the city, plan their time and explore the region. These interactions support visitors in shaping their itineraries and making informed decisions about where to visit during their time in destination.

Small interactions can lead to meaningful outcomes, whether that is directing visitors towards coastal areas, highlighting heritage locations or providing information on local amenities. These conversations help build confidence in exploring the region and contribute to a positive first impression of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

Volunteer stories at the heart of the programme

During Volunteers’ Week, VisitAberdeenshire has been sharing individual volunteer stories to highlight the people behind the welcome.

These stories reflect a range of motivations and experiences, from those inspired to give something back during retirement to individuals keen to develop new skills, meet people and build connections within the community.

Common themes include:

  • increased knowledge of the region and its visitor offer
  • the flexibility to volunteer alongside other commitments
  • the opportunity to meet visitors from around the world
  • the strong sense of community among volunteers

These personal experiences reinforce the wider value of the programme, not only for visitors but also for those who take part.

Looking ahead to the 2026 season

The programme continues to build momentum in 2026.

There are now 42 volunteers in the Welcome to Aberdeenshire pool, with around 50 cruise ship calls anticipated this season, with volunteers once again playing a key role on the quayside.

Pre-season activity has included training sessions, updated visitor materials and ongoing collaboration with partners to ensure a consistent and high-quality welcome for arriving passengers.

Recognising and thanking our volunteers

Each year, VisitAberdeenshire hosts an end of season recognition event to formally thank volunteers for their contribution. The event provides an opportunity to reflect on the season, celebrate achievements and recognise the collective impact of the team.

As part of Volunteers’ Week, this recognition extends to the wider industry, acknowledging the important role volunteers play in supporting tourism and hospitality businesses across the region.

Their contribution helps strengthen the visitor experience, supports local economic activity and reinforces Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire’s reputation as a warm and welcoming destination.

The 2026 Welcome to Aberdeenshire volunteer programme is delivered in partnership with Peterson Energies, with support from Port of Aberdeen.
